Foundation Compensation Data and Benefits

Now in its 25th year, the Croner Compensation Survey of Foundations is conducted annually to provide up-to-date and accurate market compensation and benefits data to private, independent grantmaking foundations in the U.S. The Survey was expanded to also include community foundations as of 2019.

In 2021, a total of 158 foundations participated in the Croner Compensation Survey of Foundations. Of the total participants, 103 are primarily grantmaking foundations, 10 are primarily operating foundations, 22 are a hybrid (both grantmaking and operating foundations) and 23 are community foundations. Geographic scope of grantmaking is: 29% international, 18% national, 28% multiple states / counties or cities, 16% state, 6% county and 3% city.

The report summarizes the total compensation and benefits programs of 158 participants and 175 benchmark positions. Of these positions, 160 had sufficient participant matches to report compensation data.

Foundations use the survey results to benchmark compensation, understand salary differentials and to establish rational pay structures.

The 2022 Fee for Participants / Non-Sponsors Is $950.
All survey participants receive the Full Report of Results when it is published. The Full Report of Results provides, in table format, the Compensation Data results for each survey position and also the Policies and Practices results by foundation asset size category.

Purchase by a Non-participant of the Current Published Report
There are two purchase options to purchase the current published Full Report of Results without having participated in the Survey.

Purchase Option #1:
The 2021 Full Report of Results for $3,000 and a Commitment to Participate
For foundations that meet the participation criteria and commit to participate in the subsequent year Survey, the fee to purchase the 2021 Report of Results is $3,000. Commitment to participate in the subsequent year Survey is required. General eligibility criteria for your foundation to participate are $100 million in assets and/or a minimum of 10 employees.

Purchase Option #2:
The 2021 Full Report of Results for $6,000
If your foundation does not meet the minimum participation criteria, the fee to purchase the 2021 Report of Results is $6,000.

The Croner Company aggregates data using DOJ "Safe Harbor Guidelines" to ensure full regulatory compliance of the Survey report.

Survey reports are distributed only to participants and all participants are required to sign an agreement that confirms they will abide by our confidentiality standards.
